Catalase
Catalase is an enzyme that breaks
down hydrogen peroxide into harmless water and oxygen. In the
body, hydrogen peroxide is a potent and destructive by-product
of many cellular oxidase reactions, and to keep our bodies healthy
and running well, hydrogen peroxide must quickly be converted
into something else. Without catalase, our bodies would have
to suffer the harmful effects of hydrogen peroxide. In animal
cells, catalase is found in organelles called peroxisomes, which
are involved in the metabolization of metabolites such as fatty
acids. Catalase is found in particularly high concentration
in the liver, but is found in every organ.
