Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshianus, Casara Buckthorn)
Cascara sagrada is an herb long
known for its purgative powers both in humans and animals. This
ingredient has a natural laxative effect when used in small
amounts, and it may be used for constipation; all conditions
in which easy bowel evacuation with soft stools is desirable,
for example in cases of anal fissures, hemorrhoids and after
recto-anal operations.This herb safely increases peristalsis
(the autonomic muscle contractions of the small and large intestines
which is necessary to move food along the gut) without making
the body dependent on it, one of the only herbs to work in such
a fashion. Cascara sagrada is generally not detrimental to peristaltic
movement if used for long periods of time.
Active ingredients include a complex mixture of hydroxyantthracene
glycodes, mainly a mixture of antrone glycosides, cascarosides,
and aloins. These substances induce active secretion of electrolytes
and water into the intestinal lumen and inhibit absorption of
electrolytes and water from the large intestine. The resulting
increase in volume of the bowel contents increases pressure
in the intestine and thus stimulates intestinal peristalsis.
With frequent or prolonged use, increased loss of water and
potassium salts is possible and possibly lead to the deposition
of pigment in the intestinal mucosa.
Cascara sagrada should not be used during pregnancy and lactation
or if an intestinal obstruction is suspected. Also used as a
Homeopathic or used simply as a micro-nutritional (botanical).
