Betula Alba (Betula verrucosa, Betula Verrucosa)
Betula alba comprise the variations
of the deciduous Birch trees, including Paper, American White,
Cherry, Black, Yellow and Dwarf Birch varieties. The bark of
the these various birch tress yield an plethora of compounds
of medicinal value, including betulinic acid from the white
Birch (Betula verrucosa), which has known anticarcenogenic effects.
Other North American Indian traditions include using bark extracts
for stomach cramps, intestinal aids when constipated, and as
seasonings to mask other disagreeable flavors of other medicines.
The Cherry and Black birches yield a wintergreen-like oil useful
for catarrh. A Birch Beer is made from the fermented sweet saps
of the trees in the springtime. White Birch bark extract is
known to be a parasiticide and acts as a local antiseptic.,
used commonly among the Indians.
