Berberis Vulgaris (Barberry, European Barberry)
European Barberry, also grown
in North America, whose wood is very fine-grained and hard,
generally yellow; used for toothpicks and mosaic work. Wood
and bark are a source of dye. Also contains berberine., useful
as a tonic and for gastrointestinal problems. Also known to
dilate blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure. Berberine
is a strong antiseptic that is also found in Golden Seal. It
is a stimulant on the myocardium and intestinal smooth muscle.
Historically, Barberry was found to be used by the North American
Indians for treating the liver, normalizing function; also effective
against mouth ulcers and pyorrhea, syphilis and typhoid fever.
Barberry will also reduce inflammation of the spleen caused
by irritations due to contaminated blood, or blood laden with
