Berberine Alkaloid (Berberis)
Berberine alkaloid is an alkaloid
isolated from Hydrastis canadensis L., Berberidacea, i.e., Goldenseal,
and it has since been found in many other plants, such as Barberry
(Berberis Vulgaris) and the Oregon grape root or mountain root
(Mahonia Aquifolium). Berberine is an antibiotic of celebrated
repute, useful against bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. Berberine
can inhibit Candida overgrowth, a common side effect of antibiotic
use. Berberine exhibits strong antimicrobial effects, effective
in treating the majority of common gastrointestinal infections:
active against E. coli (traveler's diarrhea), Shigella sysenterias
(shigellosis), Salmonella sp. (food poisoning), B. Klebsiella,
Giardia lambflia (giardiasis) and Vibrio cholerae (cholera).
Berberine is effective in firming the stool, but can loosen
obstructions as well, while eradicating toxins in the lower
tract, useful when treating diarrhea while preventing dehydration.
Amongst other uses, this herbal derivative has the capacity
of reducing feverish-nervousness (febrifuge) via the calming
and consolidation of the system. Berberine appears to offer
anti-infective qualities, actually inhibiting the adhesion of
disease cells (bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc.) to the body's
host cells, thus crippling the disease cell before it can do
any damage. It does this by causing the disease cell to lose
lipoteinchoic acid (LTA) which is the major substance responsible
for the adhesion of bacteria (and other disease cells) to host
tissues.
Berberine also has been shown to activate white blood cells
(macrophages) to engulf and destroy bacteria, viruses, tumor
cells and other particulate matter. It also has the power to
increase the blood supply to the spleen, and thus enhance Immune
System activity. In several clinical studies Berberine has been
shown to stimulate the secretion of bile (choleretic effect)
and moderate bilirubin levels. When used orally, Berberine caused
the disappearance of the clinical symptoms of chronic cholecystitis
(inflammation of the gall bladder), a decrease in bilirubin
levels, and an increase in the bile volume of the gallbladder.
Berberine also has been shown to correct metabolic abnormalities
in patients who suffer liver cirrhosis. Berberine, is also known
to dilate blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure.
It is a stimulant on the myocardium and intestinal smooth muscle.
In third world countries, berberine has demonstrated effectiveness
against trachoma, an infectious eye disease caused by the organism
Chlamydia trachomatous and a major cause of blindness and impaired
vision in developing countries. This form of blindness effects
over 500 million people and results in 2 million blindnesses
per year. Berberine is also effective against conjunctivitis
or pink eye.
