Bentonite
Bentonite is a native colloidal,
hydrated aluminum silicate. This absorbent clay found in the
western United States is traditionally used in conjunction with
other agents in the body's abilities to aid and protect against
diarrhea and skin profusions. There are two types of bentonite:
swelling or sodium bentonite, and non-swelling or calcium bentonite.
The type used in alternative medicine is non-swelling. Traditionally,
calcium bentonite is taken with water to cleanse the system.
It is said that ingesting bentonite causes impurities within
the body to be drawn out with the clay. The name bentonite comes
from Ft. Benton, Wyoming, where this clay has been found.
