Balm Mint (Balm of Gilead, Populus Balsamifera)
The name of this herb conjures
up biblical images of aromatic resins and healing oils. Although
the true balm of Gilead is a rare desert shrub guarded and prohibited
from export, Commiphora opobalsamum, said to have been a gift
from the Queen of Sheba to Solomon, Balm Mint has the same cooling
and soothing properties and thus adopted the same name. The
leaves from this small tree are known to be useful in preparations
of topical application, easing and soothing abrasions, known
to contain salicin, the precursor to the development of aspirin,
and is a naturally mild analgesic which is useful in the temporary
relief of minor aches and pains as well.
