Aspartic Acid (L-Aspartic Acid, L-Aspartate, Asp)
Aspartic acid is an amino acid
that promotes uptake of trace elements and is intricately involved
with the energy cycle of the body, linking two of the body's
most important biochemical pathways, the Urea cycle (the foundation
of nitrogen metabolism) and the Krebs Cycle (the body's pathways
for metabolism of carbohydrate). Aspartic acid in its "L-" form,
L-Aspartic acid, is a major excitatory transmitter in the Human
brain, and is the precursor of acetylaspartic acid, the most
highly concentrated amino acid neurotransmitter in the brain.
Aspartic acid, as well, is involved in the building of DNA and
orotates. Aspartic acid and Phenylalanine are the amino acids
which make up Aspartame, the new artificially derived "amino
acid," which is now used commonly as a sweetener.
