Aspartame
Aspartame was discovered accidentally
in 1965 during research for ulcer drugs. Made by Searle & Co.,
aspartame is used as an artificial sweetener. Because it is
unstable with high temperatures, it is not suitable for baking.
Aspartame loses its sweetening power over time in storage in
nonacid products. Made from a methyl ester of phenylalanine
and aspartic acid, aspartame is said to be 200 times sweeter
than sucrose. This ingredient was approved by the FDA in 1981
and 1983, but it is still somewhat controversial with others,
and there are many consumer health concerns. VÄXA does
not use aspartame in any of its products.
