Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood)
Perennial herb cultivated and
wild in Europe , Asia, Kashmir and Mediterranean, introduced
to North America. Used in preparation of a liqueur "absinthe"
and in Vermouth wine. Dried leaves and flowering tops are used
medicinally, being a stimulant, stomachic, tonic, anthelmintic
(Parasiticidal, or antiparasitic). Medicinally, Wormwood (the
dried leaves and flowering tops) has antiseptic qualities and
is capable of expelling intestinal worms and parasites. It also
promotes menstruation, stimulates uterine circulation and will
also help relieve menstrual cramps. It is said to also be an
excellent insect repellent. This herb should be avoided during
pregnancy, as it stimulates uterine contractions, in very large
dosages. Contains a bitter essential oil, absinthol.
