Achillea millefolium (Yarrow/Milfoil, Compositae)
As
an herbal medicine, yarrow has a wide range of uses.
Historically, yarrow was prized for its astringent
effects on wounds. When mashed and boiled to extract
oils, yarrow has been used to treat inflammations
and headaches. Yarrow is taken both internally and
externally. The flowering tops of yarrow, which have
been used as snuff historically, are said to be the
plant's most healing part. Today, yarrow is used to
treat colds, influenza, allergies, fevers, coughs,
and sore throats.
Yarrow
is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant native to
Europe and parts of Asia, but found worldwide. This
ingredient is known amongst herbalists as a potent
agent and has credibility amongst the professional
health community as well. It is known as an astringent
and helps intensify the soothing actions of other
herbs, bring perspiration to the "fevered," cleanse
the system and bolster the body's natural defenses.
When applied topically, yarrow helps reduce the oiliness
of skin, allowing the skin to remain moist without
greasiness. For this reason, it is often used to treat
eczema. Yarrow is also often used in chest rubs for
colds and the flu. It is also purported to decrease
healing time for bruises.
