5-HTP is the direct precursor to Serotonin, and a safe alternative to L-Tryptophan
(Ironically, L-Tryptophan has been cleared of any role in the EMS outbreak, it being
a problem of contamination and not with the amino acid itself, and is still used in
infant formulas and parenteral IV solutions). 5-HTP is normally converted in the
body from L-Tryptophan. Thus, 5-HTP is thought to be able to more directly influence
Serotonin production within the Hypothalamus than L-Tryptophan did. 5-HTP is some
10 times more effective than ordinary L-Tryptophan. As Serotonin levels increase,
so too can Melatonin levels which can aid in normalizing sleep patterns (just 2
steps further removed form Serotonin).
