Influenza Symptoms and Signs

Influenza is a highly infectious viral disease that affects the respiratory mucous membrane. Influenza symptoms are typically more severe than the "common cold" and characterized by a sudden onset of symptoms. Once the influenza virus has been contracted it can take 1-2 day "incubation period" before a person will notice possible signs of influenza. Symptoms can last from 1-2 weeks but fevers usually only last between 3-8 days. Influenza related illnesses often lead to fatigue.

Common Influenza symptoms include:
  • Fever (up to 104°F)
  • Chills
  • Sweating
  • Muscle aches and pain
  • Severe headache
  • Weakness and tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Chest pain
The influenza virus can damage the lining of the respiratory tract allowing other bacterial infections. Influenza can cause severe complications among patients with chronic medical conditions. Individuals 50 and older, residents of nursing homes, and people with chronic medical condition should get the 2004 Influenza Vaccination. Health care workers, women who will be pregnant during flu season, and caregivers/contacts of children under six months should receive vaccination. Young children from the ages of 6 months - 18 years on chronic aspirin therapy should also receive the influenza vaccine.

No vaccine can give an individual 100% protection from influenza symptoms. If the virus strains in the vaccine are a good match then it can prevent symptoms of influenza in 70% - 90% of healthy young adults. The vaccine strains are not always a good match; this is why it is important to exercise other options in addition to or in place of the flu shot. Unlike a bacterial infection, there are no antibiotics available for a viral illness. The body's immune system has to develop antibodies to fight a viral infection. The best way to protect your self from symptoms of influenza is by keeping your immune defense system in optimal condition.
