Homeopathy: Your Key to Natural Health?

HomeopathyWith so many issues in health care these days, it is no wonder people are searching for alternative methods to maintain and improve their health. One type of alternative medicine that is gaining popularity in the U.S. is homeopathy. With roots dating back centuries, and even its most modern incarnations hundreds of years old, homeopathy is one of the most trusted and widely practiced alternative medicines in the world.

But what is homeopathy? That really depends on who you talk to. While the definition of homeopathy is pretty universal - a remedy that follows the principle of "like cures like" - the concept of the practice takes on many forms throughout the medical community. There are many types of homeopathy, so there are a variety of options available to you for natural healing.

The Practice of Homeopathy

Homeopathy hasn't changed much since Samuel Hahnemann refined the practice in the 1700s. This German doctor decided to standardize a more natural way of treating common conditions because he was unhappy with the often toxic traditional medicine practices of the time. While there is a broader range of homeopathic remedies available today, the concept is still the same: treat the root of the problem, not just the symptoms, with natural ingredients.

In general, homeopathy involves the use of herbs and other plant and animal matter in a highly diluted solution. The basis for the practice relies on the idea that if a particular substance causes symptoms to arise in an individual, then small amounts of that same substance could stimulate the body to combat those symptoms. For example, cutting into an onion causes the eyes to burn and water, and the nose to run. These symptoms are similar to the common cold or hay fever. A homeopathic practitioner believes that the very essence of the onion that causes the burning, watery eyes and a runny nose can be diluted in a solution and ingested to help combat similar symptoms associated with colds and allergies.

Onion is a commonly used ingredient in many homeopathic supplements, along with the plants thuja and pulsatilla. A variety of minerals, such as iodium, kali phosphorus, sulphur, and natrum muriaticum, are also used as homeopathic ingredients.

Using Homeopathy for Health Conditions

Many individuals practice homeopathy for allergies, and a host of other conditions, such as:

  • Depression
  • Acne
  • Attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder (ADD/ADHD)
  • Anxiety
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Muscle cramping
  • Migraines
  • Chronic fatigue
  • And many more

Find the Right Resources

You may be interested in exploring homeopathy to help avoid one or more conditions, but it's important to consult a homeopath and your family doctor before you begin to take any new supplements. Talking with an experienced homeopath may also be helpful in that he or she can take time to thoroughly understand all of your health concerns and issues and create a homeopathic solution based on all of your health needs.
