Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine that has been around for centuries. First discovered in Germany by Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s, homeopathy has developed a large following and has many practitioners, called homeopaths, who believe that nearly anything in nature can be used to cure illness. The practice of homeopathy uses small doses of medicines that are created from all-natural ingredients and are extremely diluted by a practice of shaking and dissolving the ingredient in a solution multiple times.
The basis of this alternative health practice revolves around the concept of "The Law of Similars" which follows the premise of "like cures like," also explained as, "what makes a healthy person sick can be used to treat a sick person." A commonly used example of homeopathy is that if onions makes your eyes water and burn and make you sneeze, then when you are sneezing and have irritated eyes (from a cold for example), a diluted onion solution can be used to alleviate those symptoms.
Since homeopathy uses highly diluted natural elements, it is generally considered to be safe for use by most people. However, it is a topic of debate among the medical community. Since it is difficult to scientifically test the effects of homeopathy due to its wide use of natural ingredients and the process by which the ingredients are diluted, researchers are hesitant to back the practice without definitive scientific proof of its effectiveness.
Regardless of the opinions of scientific researchers, homeopathy has been popular throughout Europe for a long time, and has recently garnered a lot of support stateside. If you are considering homeopathic remedies for your ailments, do your research or speak with a homeopath or natural doctor for more information. It is also a good idea to consult with your doctor to help avoid any side effects or allergies you could experience from homeopathic medicinals.
