Types of Holistic Practitioner
Stating that a holistic practitioner is a doctor of alternative medicine is the same as saying that all doctors practice in the same fields. While it's true that some alternative doctors do practice general care, just as conventional doctors, alternative medicine is just as specialized as traditional medicine.
The term "holistic practitioner" is an all-encompassing term for a variety of alternative doctors. There are four main types of holistic practitioners:
- Body-centered - These health care providers focus on physical ailments like pain, digestive problems, heart problems and other health issues. They are made up of massage therapists, yoga instructors, reflexologists, acupuncturists, acupressurists, and many others.
- Energy-centered - Often referred to as "energy healers", this type of holistic practitioner manipulates energy in a way that is believed to cause healing in patients. Practitioners in this include reiki practitioners, breathworkers, tai chi masters, and others.
- Mind-centered - These care givers focus on issues of the mind, like depression, stress, and anxiety. Hypnotherapists, meta physicians, and regression therapists all fall into this category.
- Soul and spirit centered - Many holistic practitioners feel that there is a strong connection between mind, body, and soul and that the person should be treated as a whole and not a series of disconnected parts. These practitioners focus on guidance as a path to healing, and include mediums, shamans, psychics, intuitive guides, and others.
There is also a broad category of counselors, coaches, and emotional therapists that also fall under the name of holistic practitioner. With so many options available, it is important to keep an open mind when considering holistic care and research which options are best for you and your specific situation.
