Holistic Nutrition
Nutrition is a huge part of our general health. Without sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals, all the systems of our body suffer. While there are many points of reference to determine what is necessary for the proper nutrition of your body, meeting general nutrition requirements doesn't go as far as to determine what your body needs to function as a whole. Holistic nutrition takes the whole person into consideration, and addresses what each system needs to function as a whole in the long-term, not just what your body needs to function day by day.
When you are first starting to practice holistic nutrition as and alternative therapy and as part of your diet plan, there are a few things you should take into consideration:
- Do you really understand nutrition? Everyone needs a certain amount of veggies, fruits, grains, and more to function normally and healthfully, but to really understand the importance of holistic nutrition, you need to dig a little deeper. Educate yourself on the different parts of nutrition. Carbohydrates, proteins, sugars, minerals, fats, vitamins, fiber, cholesterol, calories, and other parts of your diet should all be taken into consideration in your holistic nutrition plan.
- Organic or not? While in a perfect world it would be great if people could eat organic foods all the time, it can get to be extremely expensive. Determine which foods in your diet are most affected by the production process and eat organic when you are able to help eliminate pesticides and toxins from as many of your foods as your budget will allow.
- Create a fun, functional menu. Whether you are cooking for yourself or your entire family, creating meals that are easy and delicious will make you want to eat at home more and avoid fast, unhealthy foods (and save you money!) while you introduce holistic nutrition into your diet.
As with any new diet, it is important to consult with your health care provider or a dietitian to ensure you are eating a well-balanced, healthy diet that accommodates your specific needs while adhering to holistic nutrition principles.
