Healthy Thyroid: When Should You Become Concerned About Your Thyroid Health?

healthy thyroidWhile it may not register on your top five list of health problems to be on the lookout for, a healthy thyroid is a major part of ensuring your overall health. This small gland in your neck is responsible for the function of nearly every metabolic process in your body, and an imbalance in its hormone secretion can spell big trouble for some people.

When you have a healthy thyroid, you probably aren't even aware of it. Your body functions as it should, with energy being spent when and where you body needs it. It is easier to maintain a healthy weight, your blood pressure is naturally regulated, and your cholesterol levels are lower. However, if your thyroid begins producing too much or too little of its vital hormones, you can begin to experience a variety of symptoms of thyroid problems.

Thankfully, many times a healthy thyroid rests heavily on your genes, as most thyroid disorders are often hereditary. Therefore, you should already know whether or not you should be concerned about your thyroid health and know which signs to watch out for. However, even if you do not have a family history of thyroid problems, your doctor may still want regular testing to ensure you are not at risk for developing complications and to make sure you have a healthy thyroid.

If you are concerned about your thyroid health, have a family history of thyroid problems, or simply want more information on the function of the thyroid and how it can have an effect on your health, consult with your primary care provider to learn more.
