July
is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
In
2008, the U.S. House of Representatives designated July
as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness
Month, in honor of the late African American novelist and
journalist who was a leading spokesperson for individuals
and families battling mental illness.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness reminds Americans
this month about the importance of public education on serious
mental illness issues in diverse communities, so what better
time to review your own mental health status, regardless
of your race, creed, or national origin?
Statistics show that minorities have less access to diagnosis,
treatment, care and research for mental health issues, and
according to the U.S. Surgeon General, mental illness actually
affects one in four American families, regardless of background.
