Studies
have shown that male depression often goes undiagnosed because
its symptoms are less predictable and are often attributed
to the proverbial mid-life crisis.
The National Mental Health Institute estimates that about
6 million American men and 12 million American women are diagnosed
with depression each year.
Symptoms of depression in men include excessive alcohol consumption
and extremely risky behavior. Because men may find it difficult
to discuss their depression and may not recognize their changes
in behavior as symptoms of depression many family physicians
believe the disorder is actually under-diagnosed in men.
Symptoms of depression
For both men and women, some of the more common symptoms of
depression include:
prolonged
feelings of sadness
changes
in sleep patterns (either sleeping too much or very little)
feeling
guilty and often worthless
Other
symptoms of male depression often include:
Increased
feelings of anger and frustration
Violent
behavior
Unexplained
weight loss
Decreased
ability to concentrate
Excessive
fatigue
Loss
of interest in work, hobbies and sex
Need
to isolate self from family and friends
Alcohol
and drug use (including the misuse of prescription medications)
Men
also generally aren't aware that physical chronic physical
complaints, such as headaches, digestive disorders and chronic
pain, can be symptoms of depression.
While the symptoms of depression may not seem life threatening,
experts say the condition is not one to be taken lightly.
According to the NIMH, men with depression are seven times
more likely to commit suicide than women with depression.
