More Good News about Green Leafy Vegetables
Eating
more leafy greens may reduce women's risk of developing type
2 diabetes according to a study sited in the July edition
of Diabetes Care.
The study, led by Lydia Bazzano from the Tulane University
School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans,
found that each additional daily serving of green leafy vegetables
decreases a woman's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by
almost 10 percent.
Over the course of the study, 4,529 of the participants developed
diabetes. Correlating diabetes with dietary habits, Bazzano
and co-workers calculated that the total consumption of all
fruit and vegetables was not associated with diabetes risk.
They also found that an increase of one serving per day of
green leafy vegetables reduced the risk of diabetes by nine
percent.
