Weekly Healthy Advice From Växa
Doctors’ top cholesterol picks ineffective at fighting heart disease
The news is big for those with high cholesterol and a risk of developing heart disease. A long-delayed
study showed Vytorin had no benefit on the buildup of artery plaque over the older, more reliable cholesterol
medications. The news for the one million people each week who are prescribed Zetia was similarly dismal.
While Vytorin is highly effective at lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL), researchers found the drug
is ineffective at actually lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart diseases. The
study raises many questions about whether Vytorin has the same benefits as other cholesterol medications,
prompting top cardiac physicians to now recommend that Vytorin and Zetia only be prescribed “as a last resort.”
Guidelines from the ACC and the American Heart Association say that Zetia should only be used in patients
who can't get their cholesterol down far enough with statins. Vytorin is a combination of Zetia and Zocor.
Researchers are speculating that Vytorin’s ineffectiveness at fighting heart disease stems from the fact
that it attacks cholesterol in a different way than the more traditional statin drugs. In a sense, the thing
that was supposed to make the drug unique turned out to be the thing that rendered the drug ineffective.
Study participants who took Vytorin actually suffered significantly more heart attacks, cardiovascular
deaths and heart procedures than those who got Zocor.
