Study Attributes Decreased Muscle
Mass to SAD Diet
Your
diet may be ruining your muscles. Scientists from the Agricultural
Research Service have found that the Standard American Diet
(SAD) - rich in protein, cereal grains and other acid-producing
foods appears to trigger a muscle wasting response as we age.
The study, which included nearly 400 male and female volunteers
aged 65 or older, found that participants who ate the typical
SAD diet had a higher rate of acidosis, a condition in which
the fluids of the body are slightly acidic. This acidity appears
to trigger a muscle-wasting response, according to researchers.
Researchers also found that participants whose diets were
rich in alkaline-producing foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables,
had 3.6 more pounds of lean muscle mass than volunteers who
ate fewer fruits and vegetables.
The study, which was led by physician and nutrition specialist
Bess Dawson-Hughes at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition
Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, Mass,
was published in the March issue of the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition.
