A Glycemic Index Diet: Is It Right for You?

Glycemic Index DietMany people these days are concerned with the foods they eat and how they affect one's health. With obesity and other preventable conditions linked to nutrition on the rise in the United States and other countries, it is no wonder that people are finally beginning to take a closer look at what they eat. For some, this means adopting a glycemic index diet. But what exactly is the glycemic index, and how will following it benefit you?

The glycemic index is a system that ranks food based on their carbohydrate content and how they affect a person's blood sugar levels. Generally speaking, the more simple carbs a food contains, the faster it will raise blood sugar. For some this can be extremely dangerous while for others it barely makes a difference. So, who should be on a glycemic index diet?

The system was created to help people who suffer from diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity make healthy decisions about what they eat. If a food has a GI rating below 55 (low glycemic index), it is considered to be healthier and have less of an impact on blood sugar, while foods with ratings above 55 (high glycemic index) should be avoided when possible.

While following the glycemic index will provide you with healthy food options, whether or not you need to follow a strict glycemic index diet is up to your health care provider. Consult with your doctor if you are concerned about your health and want to know more about these diet options and if it is a good choice for your health.
