Gluten & Recipes - Ways to Make Your Favorite Foods without Gluten
If you have celiac disease, you should eat foods made from recipes without gluten. Recipes for many of the common foods we eat, however, contain gluten, and the gluten-free foods you need may be difficult to find.
That's because many of the foods in the American diet are made with wheat, which contains the storage protein known as gluten. Plus, recipes for foods you can make at home, such as bread, muffins, and other baked goods, often include wheat flour as a major ingredient.
But, take heart. Increased awareness of celiac disease has resulted in the creation of more gluten-free recipes, including gluten-free bread, muffins, and even pasta, to help make your gluten intolerance diet as easy as possible.
A few examples of foods made from gluten-free recipes include:
- White bread with rice four
- Corn bread with corn meal
- Herb croutons with rice flour, spices, and chicken or turkey broth
- Muffins with potato starch
With these types of recipes in mind, you can get creative with your cooking and baking. For instance, you can substitute wheat flour with corn starch, tapioca starch, sorghum flour, chickpea flour, and other products. Additionally, you can find gluten-free vanilla, brown sugar, and molasses, to substitute for similar products with gluten in your recipes. Look for the "GF" label on these and other items.
You can eat delicious foods and maintain a healthy diet even if you have celiac disease. Of course, before you substitute gluten in the recipes you use to make your favorite foods, check with your doctor or a registered dietician for recommendations on the nutritional value of your gluten substitutes.
