Glutathione: The Mother of All Antioxidants?
Glutathione is a hydrophilic antioxidant found in every cell in the human body, and is often considered to be one of the most important antioxidants due to the fact that it is found directly within the cells themselves. Because of its abundance and importance in the breakdown of free radicals from within the cells, glutathione is often called "the mother of all antioxidants."
Like most antioxidants, glutathion is often found in many of the foods we eat, and is generally considered part of a healthy, balanced diet. Foods that contain high levels of glutathione include:
- Garlic
- Broccoli
- Onions
- Dairy products
- Oats
- Granola
- Pork
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Watermelon
Most people with diets high in fresh fruits and vegetables are able to get enough glutathione in order to maintain proper health. However, many people with specific food allergies, immune deficiencies, or who have a generally poor diet low in fresh foods consider glutathione supplementation to be a helpful method for obtaining healthy amounts of this substance.
