Ear Infection Causes

Ear infection causesEar infections are one of the most common ailments among school-aged children. Many children experience recurring infections which cause many parents to wonder what ear infection causes are, so they can avoid them in the future.

The middle ear is connected to the nose and throat by a series of tubes called the Eustachian tubes. During illness, such as colds, sinus infections, or allergies, these tubes can become inflamed and blocked. This blockage can cause air to get trapped and prevents fluid from draining out of the middle ear. Because the liquid can't escape, a vacuum is created that pulls fluid back into the ear from the nose and throat, and when it becomes backed up and stagnant within the ear, it can cause bacteria and viruses to grow out of control, causing an ear infection.

There are two main ear infection causes - bacterial and viral infections.

  • Bacterial infection - This is the primary cause of ear infections. In a healthy person, there are many types of beneficial bacteria that live in our noses, throats, mouths, and ears that are usually kept in check with proper fluid drainage. However, when the Eustachian tubes become blocked and the bacteria get trapped in the inner ear, an infection can develop. The most common bacteria that cause ear infections are Streptococcus pneumoniae (also called pneumococcus), Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis.
  • Viral infections - Viral ear infections often accompany illnesses in children. Colds, respiratory viruses, and the flu are the most common viruses that will cause an ear infection. The flu and cold season between January and March of each year accounts for the rise in ear infection during this period.
If you child has recently been ill or is experiencing allergies and complaining of pain or stuffiness in the ears, your child may have an ear infection. Your doctor will be able to determine what causes are producing the ear infection, prescribe medication to help relieve the condition, and may recommend ear tube surgery for children who suffer from recurring ear infections.
