Dyslexia Statistics

Dyslexia StatisticsOne of the most misunderstood, yet more common, learning disabilities is dyslexia. The most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling difficulties, there are surprising dyslexia statistics that surround this condition.

Some shocking dyslexia statistics to take into consideration are:

  • 1 in 5 children have a language-based learning disability.
  • 70-80% of people with poor reading skills are likely to suffer from dyslexia.
  • Less than 1/3 of children with a reading problem are not getting the help they need in school.
  • 30-50% of the total population may have an undiagnosed learning disability.
  • 44% of parents wait more than a year to seek help for their children when they show signs of dylexia or having a learning disability.

Being dyslexic does not make a person illiterate. While an afflicted person may have trouble reading and oftentimes expressing themselves in writing, dyslexia does not hinder their intelligence or creativity; however, it can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Thankfully, overcoming dyslexia is a real possibility for people who suffer from this condition, and these dyslexia statistics only show how common this condition is and how many people live with dyslexia every day.
