Dieting Tips
There's no lack of dieting tips out there that claim to help you lose weight fast, but many health care professionals feel that "dieting" is a bad word. By this, they mean that "crash dieting" may help you lose weight initially, but does little to help you keep the weight off once you have met your goals. Permanent changes in diet more similar to lifestyle changes are what give the best results, and many experts recommend that those looking to lose weight should consider only dieting tips that will help them out most in the long run.
Some healthy dieting tips many health care and weight loss professionals recommend include:
- Drink lots of water - It is very easy to confuse thirst with hunger, and many times a glass of water will fill you up.
- Add to your diet, don't take away - While lowering your caloric intake is important in weight loss, it is important to add what you may have been missing to your diet, and to eat a variety of weight loss foods to keep it interesting. Fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies and whole grains should replace nutritional gaps in your diet that were filled with processed foods and sweets. Also keep an eye on what kinds of carbohydrates you are consuming. Complex carbs from fruits and veggies are good, but simple carbs from processed sugars are not. Low carb diet plans eliminate all carbs, including the good ones, which result in rabit weight loss in the short term, but does little to keep the weight off once you end the diet.
- Why are you eating? - The main reason people gain weight is because they overeat. What is causing you to eat past simply being hungry? Emotional eating and stress eating are common reasons because food makes us feel better. Address the reasons you are overeating, and the rest of these dieting tips will come together much easier.
- Portion control - A huge problem with the American diet is that we just eat too much. Our standard portions are usually much larger than they should be. Remember, your stomach is only the size of your fist, so it doesn't take more than a handful of food to fill it up! Use smaller plates when eating at home to make correct portions feel larger, and always take leftovers home from restaurants. Eating more slowly can also help since it gives your brain time to register when you're full.
- Eliminate mindless eating - Eating can be a habit just like anything else, and many people fall into poor eating routines. Senseless snacking and eating after dinner before bed are often done without even thinking about it.
- Limit (don't eliminate!) your vices - People give up on diets faster when they cut out the foods they love completely. There's nothing wrong with ice cream and cookies as long as they are eaten in moderation. Instead of sitting down with a carton of ice cream serve yourself a half-cup scoop, or buy 2 fresh cookies from the deli instead of a whole box. Keep in mind that these should be a treat, not a regular part of your diet.
- Eat more frequently - This doesn't mean you should eat more, but eat more frequently. Studies have shown that people who eat 4-5 small meals a day (opposed to 3 large ones) lose more weight and are better able to keep it off.
- Get spicy! - Using spices to flavor your foods not only stimulates your metabolism, but also actually causes you to eat less because the flavors linger longer. They can also help add flavor to food without increasing calorie content like butter and sugar do.
These are just a handful of easy to follow dieting tips that can help you on your way to healthy weight loss. Before starting any weight loss plan, it is important to speak with your health care provider. He or she will be able to help you set a healthy target weight and provide you with even more dieting tips to help you on your way.
