Diabetes and Alcohol: What Do You Need to Know?

diabetes and alcoholWhen it comes to diabetes, there are a lot of dos and don'ts as far as what should be consumed and on what level. If you are suffering from this condition, then alcohol is definitely one of the substances that you should be watching.

The relationship between diabetes and alcohol has often been a hot topic for health care professionals. This is because the body processes alcohol as quickly as it does fat, which can raise blood sugar to dangerous levels if not monitored. Conversely, excessive alcohol consumption can dangerously lower blood sugars. Alcohol can also interfere with medication and diabetes diets. It is recommended that if you have diabetes to refrain from alcohol, but if you do choose to consume, basic health tips include:

  • Limiting consumption to 2 drinks per day (5 oz of wine, 1.5 oz of liquor, and 12 oz of beer count as one drink each).
  • Make sure you eat before you drink.
  • Pace yourself.
  • Avoid sugary drinks.
  • Dilute drinks when possible with mixers, and do your best to avoid strong drinks.

It is healthy practice to limit your alcohol consumption regardless of any health conditions you may be suffering from; however, it is particularly important to watch what and how much you drink when you have diabetes.

If you have any other questions about diabetes and alcohol, how affects your health, and how you can take your health into your own hands to stay well and the best options for diabetes management, consult with your health care provider for more information.
