Crohn's Disease and Children
Crohn's disease is a chronic and painful digestive condition that can affect anyone of any age, even young children. Many people are diagnosed with Crohn's disease in their 20s and 30s, but many adults with Crohn's disease recall experiencing the symptoms as children.
Normal symptoms include painful cramping, diarrhea, loss of appetite, ulcers, and many others. However, Crohn's disease in children can manifest itself differently and cause a variety of complications. Many kids with Crohn's experience:
- Stunted growth
- Delayed puberty
- Weak bones
- Poor nutrition
- Emotional distress
Since many children often complain of stomachaches, it can be difficult for parents to decipher between a child who has eaten too much and a child who is suffering from a painful condition. If your child constantly complains of an upset stomach and is experiencing the above symptoms, you may want to seek the advice of your health care provider. He or she should be able to help figure out what is affecting your child, as well as create a plan to help you manage their pain and advise ways that you can provide your child with the Crohn's disease support they need.
