Crohn's Disease Causes

If you have recently been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, have a family member with the condition, or even just suspect you may have Crohn's disease, you most likely have been doing some research on the subject. Although there is a lot of information available on the condition and its symptoms, you may still be wondering what the Crohn's disease causes are. The reason for this lack of information is probably because, like with many digestive disorders, health researchers don't know the exact cause of Crohn's disease. Diet and stress can aggravate the condition, but they do not cause it.

While definitive Crohn's disease causes are unknown, researchers have theories about what possible causes may be. Some include:

  • Immune System - Many researchers believe that Crohn's disease is caused by an immune response to natural bacteria in the intestine, which in turn results in damage to the lining of the tract. People with compromised immune systems are also more likely to develop the condition.
  • Heredity - A common trait that many Crohn's patients share is a mutation of the NOD2 gene, which indicates that the disease may be hereditary. People with a family history of Crohn's are more likely to develop the condition. Also, people with the NOD2 mutation are more likely to develop complications like fistulas and abscesses.

Even though there is no cure and Crohn's disease causes are still under investigation, living with Crohn's does not have to be a struggle. Speak with your health care provider about how to manage your symptoms with changes in diet, lifestyle, and the possibility of medication depending on the severity of your symptoms in order to find Crohn's disease relief.
