Children’s
Health 101:
An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
It’s
been said, “The only job that comes with no training
manual is parenting”. Unless we were old enough to
help take care of our siblings, most of us enter this new
frontier with little or no experience. We don’t want
to take chances with our children’s health yet it
seems to be the very first thing we worry about. A child
may get sick sooner or later, but there are probably more
ways to prevent illness and fortify children’s health
than you know.
Since
our American health care system is more geared to treating
illness than preventing it, the prevention part is up to
us. We don’t have to fly into the first health emergency
by the seat of our pants! The trick is to get plenty of
children’s health information in calm times, before
a storm. This makes a huge difference in the continued good
health of our kids.
To get
you started in preventive wellness for children’s
health, here are some simple tips. Find in-depth information
about each topic on the left navigation bar:
- Children
and Medicine – Babies and small children need time
to develop their own Immune Systems. We interfere with their
developing immunities by making prescription medicine such
as steroids and antibiotics our first resource. Their bodies
can either become dependent on the medication or reject
it when really needed.
- Food Allergies – Children exhibit many common food
allergies early, including dairy, sugar, wheat, peanuts,
and food dye. Food allergy symptoms can mimic or contribute
to asthma, bronchitis, colic, infections, digestive disturbances
and ADD/ADHD-type behaviors.
- Daily Nutrition – Children simply must learn good
food-group inclusion habits and relaxed eating situations.
Besides not giving them that second glass of sugary chocolate
milk, adult food behavior and the family’s schedule
can deeply impact this area.
- Daily Supplementation - Children’s health and immunities
can be enhanced early with homeopathically (not synthetically)
formulated antioxidant vitamins and minerals, preventive
herbs, essential fatty acids, and probiotics.
- Common Infections – The most common infections,
like ear and sinus, can be dealt with naturally in the absence
of dire symptoms. Antibiotics are good for bacterial, not
viral, fungal or combination infections, and should be left
for certain circumstances. “Superbugs” which
become resistant to antibiotics endanger our children’s
health.
