Helping Children with ADD Cope With Bullies and Teasing
Children with ADD or without ADD will eventually experience the typical problems of growing up. Some of the most difficult problems occur when children with ADD go to school, where they will encounter nice children and perhaps not-so-nice children. Unfortunately, all children can be subject to teasing from their peers, which may be hurtful to parents and children alike.
We all know that kids can be cruel to one another, so it's important to be understanding and supportive if your child has ADD. Some ways you can help your child cope with bullies and teasing at school include:
- Making sure you don't discount his or her feelings. If a child has been teased, he or she may feel hurt or upset. It's important for you to understand how your child is feeling and to make sure you don't exacerbate the problems. Telling your child he or she may be overreacting, that it's "no big deal," or to "get over it" may make the situation worse. Showing compassion is very important.
- Teaching your child how to react to potential bullies at school. Helping your child understand how to ignore teasing can help a lot if he or she faces teasing at school.
- Listening to your child. If your child is having a rough time at school, it can help just to lend an ear and listen to his or her troubles. Simply venting to another person can help your child cope with ADD.
If you have a child or children with ADD, it's helpful for you to learn as many ways as you can to deal with symptoms. School can be hard at times for children who deal with ADD or ADHD, but with your help and understanding, the journey can be a little easier.
