Early Detection is Vital for Treating a Child Behavior Disorder

Child Behavior DisorderEvery child misbehaves now and then. It's part of growing up. An occasional rebellion against authority is natural as a child learns about socially acceptable behavior at home and at school. And every parent knows that a child of any age is more likely to become uncooperative or downright ornery if he or she is tired or hungry. Growing up isn't easy, and a child is going to respond viscerally -- sometimes with a very loud, very insistent temper tantrum -- when the challenges of early life become overwhelming.

When consistently unruly or disruptive behavior begins to interfere with a child's development, though, it might be time to ask your family doctor whether your son or daughter is exhibiting symptoms of a child behavior disorder such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or conduct disorder. The earlier these behavior disorders can be diagnosed and treated the better, because children with unchecked symptoms can have trouble functioning effectively later in life.

ADHD is common in children and teens and can affect adults, as well. The symptoms are extreme inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Sometimes, ADHD patients also will exhibit symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, which are collectively known as disruptive behavior disorders. It's extremely important to consult with your pediatrician or mental health professional if your child consistently displays these symptoms for six months or longer:

  • Unwarranted anger
  • Hostility
  • Temper tantrums
  • Failure to follow instructions
  • Violent acts
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Persistent flaunting of rules or laws

A child disruptive behavior disorder, when caught early, usually can be managed effectively through behavior modification therapy. But if the behavior is left unchecked, the child will have difficulties later on. Knowing the signs of behavior disorders is an important step toward making sure your child leads a happy, productive life.
