Aluminum
is Not Just in Cans
You come into contact
with aluminum every day. The aluminum foil you used to wrap your
child’s lunch in, the aluminum soda can you drank out of at
work, and even the aluminum car you drove to the supermarket. Aluminum
is everywhere, and maybe that’s because aluminum is the most
abundant metal in the Earth’s crust. Aluminum is also very
popular because it can resist corrosion and is flexible, durable
and lightweight. Plus, it is pliable so it can be easily machined,
cast and shaped.
Although aluminum can be found in many areas of life, this metal
also has controversy surrounding it. The use of aluminum in foods
and antiperspirants has caused concern from the public. Some research
has shown that the body may absorb aluminum in food more, and aluminum
in antiperspirants may cause breast cancer. Aluminum has also been
pinpointed as a possible cause of Alzheimer’s disease, although
research has been inconclusive.
Aluminum poisoning has been known to cause decomposition in the
bones and potential renal failure. Some people are allergic to aluminum
and have the following reactions:
- Itchy rash when skin comes into contact with
aluminum, like in antiperspirants
- Digestive disorder when eating foods cooked
in aluminum pans
- Vomiting when they take antacids
These allergies are quite rare, though.
To find out more about aluminum, and aluminum poisoning, do your
research and consult a physician. Sometimes fears and rumors are
unfounded, and it’s important to consult and expert to save
yourself unnecessary worry and stress.
