Avoid
Certain Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure
If you are trying to naturally
lower your blood pressure with minimal use of prescription
medication there are certain things that are to be avoided.
There are several natural supplements that, while good for
other health issues, will increase your blood pressure even
further.
Some supplements to avoid
include:
- Licorice – Commonly used
to ease congestion and stomach problems, it is not recommended
that people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or
diabetes take licorice supplements. The over use of licorice
supplements (more than 50 g per day and/or for longer
than six weeks) can cause low potassium and high sodium
levels in the blood, increased blood pressure, and other
heart and blood related problems.
- Ephedra – Banned in the
United States since 2006, it was commonly used in weight
loss and sports performance enhancement supplements. It
has been found to increase the heart rate and body temperature
and constrict blood vessels.
- Asian Ginseng – Also known
as Panax ginseng, its side effects may include insomnia,
headaches, high blood pressure and heart palpitations,
nervousness and agitation, and diarrhea.
- Rosemary essential oil –
A natural stimulant that can be used to treat mild pain,
coughs, dandruff, and mild depression, it can increase
heart rates and blood pressure.
When adding any supplement
to your current regimen it is important to consult with your
doctor to determine any side effects that you may encounter,
such as those listed above. Though they do promote a variety
of health benefits, not all supplements work in harmony with
each other or underlying conditions you may have.
