Blastocystis Hominis Infection - What is It & How to Prevent Becoming Infected
The blastocystis hominis is a microscopic parasite that infects the body and can remain in a person's intestines for several weeks to a few years, sometimes without any symptoms. Blastocystic hominis is a very common worm that is thought to infect people who live in poor and unsanitary conditions, although the true source of contamination is unknown.
You may be infected with this parasitic organism if you are experiencing abdominal pain, anal itching, loose or watery stools, diarrhea, excess gas, and weight loss. A telltale sign that you have blastocystis hominis is finding these worms in your stool. If you think you may be infected, consult your physician. Your doctor may ask you for some stool samples to test, or you can provide a worm sample as well. Patients are typically treated with a prescription, although sometimes the medication does not work.
The best way to combat blastocystic hominis is to proactively avoid the possible causes of this infection. You can do this by washing your hands with soap and water after using the restroom and before handling food. Also, avoid drinking any water or eating any food you suspect may be contaminated, and wash and peel any fruits or vegetables that you plan to eat. And, if you're traveling to a country where the water supply may be unsafe, avoid drinking tap water or eating raw or undercooked foods.
