Inattention
Disorder:
Is Your Child A Daydreamer?
Children who suffer from inattention
disorder often daydream or look out of windows. Girls suffer from
inattention disorder more than boys do. Those who have an inattention
disorder get labeled as: preoccupied, lazy, spacey, couch potatoes,
slow, etc. The inattention disorder is likely due to underactivity
in the prefrontal and temporal lobes (areas involved with concentration
and memory) of the brain. Other symptoms of inattention disorder
according to the DSM-IV-TR are:
- Often becoming easily distracted by irrelevant
sights and sounds
- Often failing to pay attention to details
and making careless mistakes
- Rarely following instructions carefully and
completely losing or forgetting things like toys, or pencils,
books, and tools needed for a task
- Often skipping from one uncompleted activity
to another
If you think your child suffers from inattention
disorder then look for other symptoms of attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder such as:
- Problems adapting to new things
- A tendency to disturb other children
- Self-destructive behavior
- Difficulty doing assignments or chores on
one's own
- Temper Tantrums
- Impatience; difficulty waiting
- Low tolerance for stress and otherwise ordinary
problems
- A tendency to become frustrated quickly
- Inability to sit still for any length of
time
- Impulsive, unpredictable, or daring behavior
- Clumsiness or awkwardness
- A tendency to talk too much
- Disruptiveness in the classroom
- A tendency to blurt out answers without having
heard the entire question
- Failure in school despite average or above
average intelligence
It is important to get an early
diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder. If the disorder gets left undiagnosed and untreated
then the child with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder may start to suffer from low self-esteem,
depression, or even anxiety
disorders. Adults who suffer from inattention disorder may have
problems with relationships and in the work place.
Some of the treatments used for
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders
are: pharmaceutical drugs (stimulant, non-stimulant, and antidepressants),
cognitive-behavioral therapy, social skills training, parent education,
and some modifications to educational programs. The stimulant pharmaceutical
drugs have unfortunate side effects such as: loss of appetite, weight
loss, sleeping problems, irritability, rapid heart rate, elevated
blood pressure, withdrawn behavior, tics, and suppression of growth.
Also, antidepressant pharmaceutical drugs can be habit forming.
