Distractibility:
Why Can't Your Child Stay Focused?
Distractibility is more than a
short attention span. Distractibility is when one is hypersensitive
to the environment around them. Imagine your child sitting in class
at their desk trying to pay attention to the teacher, but he sees
that his classmate has a new folder, or he sees that the janitor
is outside sweeping and now he is distracted and no longer paying
attention to the teacher. It is that easy. Most of us can ignore
environmental sights and sounds, but a child with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder who suffers from distractibility
cannot. The distractibility is likely due to underactivity in the
prefrontal cortex of the brain.
The prefrontal cortex is what tells the areas of the brain to settle
down. It sends inhibitory signals to the parietal lobes to filter
out sights and sounds of the environment. It also sends inhibitory
signals to the limbic system (emotional centers of the brain). This
causes internal distractibility, where one may be distracted by
not only outside stimuli, but also by internal thoughts and emotions.
If you think your child suffers from distractibility then look for
other symptoms of attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder such as:
- Problems adapting to new things
- A tendency to disturb other children
- Self-destructive behavior
- Difficulty doing assignments or chores on
one's own
- Temper Tantrums
- Impatience; difficulty waiting
- Low tolerance for stress and otherwise ordinary
problems
- A tendency to become frustrated quickly
- Inability to sit still for any length of
time
- Impulsive, unpredictable, or daring behavior
- Clumsiness or awkwardness
- A tendency to talk too much
- Disruptiveness in the classroom
- A tendency to blurt out answers without having
heard the entire question
- Failure in school despite average or above
average intelligence
It is important to get an early
diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder. If the disorder gets left undiagnosed and untreated
then the child with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder may start to suffer from low self-esteem,
depression, or even anxiety
disorders. Adults with this hyperactivity disorder may have
problems with relationships and in the work place.
Some of the treatments
used for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorders are: pharmaceutical drugs (stimulant, non-stimulant,
and antidepressants), cognitive-behavioral therapy, social skills
training, parent education, and some modifications to educational
programs. The stimulant pharmaceutical drugs have unfortunate side
effects such as: loss of appetite, weight loss, sleeping problems,
irritability, rapid heart rate, elevated blood pressure, withdrawn
behavior, tics, and suppression of growth. Also, antidepressant
pharmaceutical drugs can be habit forming.
