Conservative Sciatica Treatment Methods

After diagnosing you with a specific condition that's causing the compression of your sciatic nerve, your doctor will likely provide you with a list of sciatica treatment options. It is possible that your doctor may recommend a treatment routine or regimen to adhere to daily, such as gentle stretching techniques. Your doctor also may suggest a prescription drug to nullify the symptoms of sciatica. Whatever the specific treatment is that you are recommended, you can be almost certain that it will be a conservative (nonsurgical) form of treatment. Surgery is a viable treatment option, but it is typically reserved as a last-resort option for about five to ten percent of people with sciatica who have found conservative methods ineffective in decreasing their symptoms.

Physical Therapy as a Sciatica Treatment Method

Physical therapy will oftentimes be recommended as a form of conservative sciatica treatment. The implementation of physical therapy exercises as a treatment method is likely to increase mobility and strength. On its own, physical therapy has not been known to produce significant results, but when combined with other methods, or used as a supplementary method, it can be a beneficial form of sciatica treatment. However, it is very important to strictly adhere to the plan set forth by your doctor or physical therapist, as any deviation from the regimen could actually worsen your condition.

The Use of NSAIDs to Reduce Sciatica

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are also a popular conservative treatment option. Just as the name suggests, these drugs provide relief from swelling without the use of steroids. These drugs work as a sciatica treatment by blocking certain enzymes from making prostaglandins, which are responsible for inducing swelling. Less swelling around the sciatic nerve can translate to less pain and stiffness. NSAIDs range from over-the-counter drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen to more intensive prescription drugs, like Voltaren and Relafen. Ask your doctor if the implementation of NSAIDs could provide formidable relief for your specific condition.
