Pinched Nerve Causes
Pinched nerve causes can take the form of many different, unique spinal abnormalities. A pinched nerve in the neck or back simply means that a nerve has been constricted by another portion of the spinal anatomy, such as a bone or intervertebral disc. However, what causes these pinched nerves are specific conditions found within the spinal column. These conditions typically involve a piece of the spinal anatomy that has moved out of place, worn down, developed growths, or ruptured. Some of the most common forms of these spinal abnormalities that can directly cause pinched nerves include herniated discs, bone spurs, and spondylolisthesis (vertebral slippage).
The Degenerative Process Our Bodies Take
Aging is also an important factor that can give way to more specific and direct pinched nerve causes. As we age, our bodies slowly begin to naturally deteriorate. This process takes an especially great toll on the spine, largely because the spine is tasked with supporting the weight from the upper body and enabling a wide range of movements like bending and twisting. The degenerative process can weaken all components of the spine including the intervertebral discs, the facet joints, and the vertebrae. It is certainly true that pinched nerves are directly caused by specific spinal abnormalities, including spondylolisthesis (vertebral slippage) and bulging discs, but many of the specific conditions resulting in pinched nerves develop as a result of aging and the body's degenerative process.
Preventative Measures to Take
There's no way to completely avoid the possibility of pinching a nerve, but there are a few things everyone can do maintain a healthy spine and reduce the risk of having a nerve pinched. The most important factor determining spinal health, especially with increasing age, is weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is the single most important thing you can do to minimize your chances of developing any form of spinal abnormality. Also, maintaining a proper posture can keep a spine healthy, and reduce the likelihood that one of many pinched nerve causes will develop. And finally, pay attention what you put into your body. A nutritious, balanced diet is good for your entire body, but poor eating habits, as well as smoking, can be detrimental to your spine's overall health.
