Bulging Disc Causes Explained

Bulging disc causes take a wide spectrum. Intervertebral discs can protrude beyond their normal boundaries (or "bulge") because they've been subjected to some sort of extreme pressure. For instance, sudden traumatic accidents and rough sports injuries can lead to the development of a bulging disc. However, the most common causes of a bulging disc involve nothing more than the natural aging process and the degenerative changes that accompany it.

Age and the Weight from Above

The combination of growing older and the constant job of supporting weight from the entire body is certainly one of the foremost causes of a bulging disc. With age, the discs in our spine naturally lose their elasticity and ability to retain water. They become flatter, more rigid, and weaker overall. Though the force endured from overall bodyweight and frequent motion may remain the same through the years, the effects on the weaker discs are as if the weight and movements pushing down on them has increased significantly. Eventually, these pressures become too much for the discs to bear, and discs will protrude beyond their normal boundaries and oftentimes bulge into the spinal canal, which may lead to the compression of a nearby spinal nerve root.

Figuring Out Your Specific Bulging Disc Cause

Chances are, you'll never know whether your bulging disc was caused by having poor posture over many decades, or because you got in a car accident years ago, or simply because your spine is going through the normal aging process. However, once a physician has diagnosed you with a bulging disc, he or she can provide you with a plan to keep your spine healthy and possibly prevent back pain in the future. Maintaining a healthy weight, remaining limber, exercising regularly, and avoiding tobacco products are all recommended ways to keep your spine in good health. Ask your doctor for more information on lifestyle changes you can make to relieve your bulging disc symptoms and support a healthy spine.
