Foods To Avoid With Acid Reflux

Once you experience acid reflux symptoms for weeks or months on end, you may begin to wonder if the symptoms are related to your diet. Acid reflux patients will regularly ask the question: Are there foods to avoid with acid reflux? The answer is, yes and no.

Through years of research, it does appear that there are certain foods causing acid reflux symptoms in many patients. This does not mean, however, that food alone is the cause of acid reflux. Even if you faithfully shun a list of foods to avoid with acid reflux, you may still experience acid reflux symptoms.

Different foods and beverages trigger acid reflux in different people. The most frequent foods to avoid with acid reflux are:

  • Coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages
  • Chocolate
  • Fried foods and fatty foods
  • Tomatoes and tomato-based foods
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Alcohol
  • Onions, especially raw onions
  • Mashed potatoes, French fries, and potato chips
  • Ground beef and marbled sirloin
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Spaghetti with tomato sauce
  • Salad dressings

In addition to foods to avoid with acid reflux, there are also eating habits you can avoid to help your acid reflux symptoms. If you suffer from acid reflux, it is recommended that you avoid eating large meals, stooping down or bending while you eat or soon after you eat, as well as lying down after eating. It also helps to keep a food diary so that you can note your own personal foods to avoid with acid reflux.
