School and Homework Tips for Attention Deficit Children

School and Homework Tips for Attention Deficit ChildrenSchool can be difficult for any child, since children often feel the material is not interesting or too hard, plus, who can concentrate on worksheets when the playground is right outside? Likewise, attention deficit children find school challenging, too. Just sitting in one place for an extended period of time and being quiet can be taxing for a child with ADD or ADHD. With proper treatments and counseling, though, there are ways to cope with these frustrations and excel in school.

The following tips can help attention deficit children do well in school and cope with their attention deficit:

  • Breaking up big school projects like reports into smaller parts like researching, planning, and writing. Breaking up projects into smaller bites can help children maintain control over the situation and steer them away from feeling overwhelmed.
  • Setting a schedule of when things should be completed. For example, if a child has homework a few times a week, making sure it's done on time can boost a child's confidence since the teacher will not scold him or her over missed homework.
  • Do homework in shorter shifts. Realize that attention deficit children may not want to sit down with you with their homework for hours on end. Consider scheduling half-hour shifts for homework.
  • Asking the child's teacher to seat your child away from distractions such as windows and doors. Children with ADD or ADHD may feel compelled to pay closer attention to the teacher and lessons if he or she is seated near other well-behaved children, also. Keeping communication lines open with the teacher can provide your child with an ally at school, which may make learning easier.

Thanks to their high energy and intelligence, attention deficit children can do as well as any other child in school. With these tips and your ongoing support, your children can learn how to stay attentive and get on the road to excelling at school!
