Ascorbic Acid: Vitamin C
Ascorbic acid is one of the most common and important antioxidants. Also known as vitamin C, ascorbic acid is vital in maintaining a healthy immune system and the breakdown of damaging free radicals and works from within the cells as a hydrophilic antioxidant (water soluble).
The main purpose of ascorbic acid is the neutralization of hydrogen peroxide, the most damaging type of free radical. Not only does hydrogen peroxide cause the most damage of any other free radical, but it is also said to act as an "infection, spreading throughout the body turning otherwise harmless oxygen molecules into more hydrogen peroxide. Without sufficient amounts of ascorbic acid to combat these cells before they get out of control, the immune system may become weak and unable to fight off even common colds effectively.
In order to make sure you're getting enough ascorbic acid, it is important to include in your diet an abundance of foods like:
- Broccoli
- Strawberries
- Kale
- Citrus fruits like oranges, limes, and lemons
- Tomatoes
- Bell peppers
- Cabbage
- Watermelon
- Zucchini
- Much more
