Apraxia Treatment Options

Apraxia Treatment OptionsApraxia is a speech disorder in which affected individuals have difficulty pronouncing certain words and sounds. For those suffering from the disorder, apraxia treatment may help recover some speech abilities. As with other disorders, early detection and intervention are considered to be two of the most important steps towards a successful apraxia treatment regimen.

There are two different forms of apraxia: acquired apraxia of speech, and developmental apraxia of speech. Acquired apraxia of speech most often occurs in adults and is usually the result of some type of brain trauma or other neural injury. This affliction results in the loss of speech abilities that the affected patient previously had. Developmental apraxia of speech occurs in young children who are likely born with the condition. Until a proper diagnosis is made and a childhood apraxia treatment program begins, a child with developmental apraxia may have continuous problems learning a language because they can have difficulty pronouncing words and sounds. Apraxia, however, generally does not affect a person's cognitive abilities. Individuals with the disorder may be able to understand speech; they just may not be able to reproduce it.

If you believe you or your child is displaying symptoms of this disorder, a good source for proper apraxia treatment may be a speech-language pathologist. They may be able to use a variety of techniques and practices and tailor a specific treatment program to suit individual needs. This treatment usually begins after a thorough examination and diagnosis from a doctor.
