Anxiety in Women
Anxiety affects women across the country, and it is a serious health issue that often requires professional treatment in order to provide the sufferer with relief from this often debilitating condition. Although they are seen in both sexes, anxiety disorders are twice as common in women as they are in men, and anxiety can even cause women to take less fulfilling jobs that require little interaction, or to avoid social situations that may make them feel uncomfortable.
Some of the reasons that anxiety in women is more commonly diagnosed than in men include:
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Low levels of estrogen or progesterone
- PMS, PMDD, post-partum depression, an menopause
- Cultural influences (it is more acceptable for women to show emotion than men, women are viewed as the weaker sex, etc.)
- Prior emotional experiences such as trauma or abuse
- Genetics
Women who suffer from anxiety are also more likely to develop other anxiety-related conditions such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), panic attacks, depression, and social phobias. Anxiety in women is a real problem, and unfortunately many won't seek out the help they need to get their issues and anxiety symptoms under control.
If you or someone you know is suffering from anxiety or an anxiety-related condition, it is important to find treatment options that are effective in order to lead a happy, fulfilling life.
