Fruits
Antioxidants: Nutritious and Delicious
Fruits and antioxidants are practically
synonymous. Study after study has shown that fruits packed with
antioxidants like strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, red grapes,
and raspberries are thought to help prevent serious diseases. Tomatoes,
also considered fruits, are high in antioxidants as well. Not only
are they delectable, these small foods are a major force in the
battle against free radicals. Fruits containing antioxidants are
essential to the body since they fight against the rebellious and
dangerous free radicals. Free radicals are harmful molecules that
cause damage to the body and experts believe they can lead to heart
disease, cancer and other illnesses.
Fruits with antioxidants are rich in flavonoids and vitamins C,
D, and E. Red wine and teas are also rich in antioxidants like flavonoids,
which can be found in plants. Fruits with antioxidants have similar
and different benefits. These are a few of the fruits with antioxidants
and why they’re beneficial to the human body:
- Red Grapes—numerous studies have gushed
about the benefits small amounts of red wine can have on the
heart. This is because of substances found in red grapes called
resveratrol and quercetin. These two fruit antioxidants seek
out free radicals while helping blood vessels remain open. Resveratrol
is thought to help prevent cancer while also lessening the risk
of gastric ulcers and strokes.
- Tomatoes—these red beauties are flavorful
and believed to help prevent macular degeneration, cataracts,
and maintain healthy mental function through the years. Men
who eat tomatoes are found to be less likely to develop prostate
cancer and some studies have suggested that the antioxidant
lycopene helps fight against lung and breast cancer.
- Berries—these sweet and sour fruits
are filled with antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins.
They are known for helping to prevent cancer, heart disease,
carcinogens and age-related cognitive function loss.
Although some people take antioxidant supplements,
experts say sticking to a diet chockfull of vegetables and fruits
with antioxidants is more beneficial. It is recommended that people
eat five to nine servings of vegetables and fruits with antioxidants
a day.
