Anti
Aging Weight Loss:
Why You Should Stay Away From Sugar
So you’ve tried to
lose weight for ages but you haven’t been able to stick to
a diet and exercise regime. Looking thinner hasn’t been enough
of a motivator to make you put down those cookies, and you’re
not sure what would. How about your skin? A recent study found that
anti aging and weight loss could be linked. Experts believe that
a lifetime of eating excess amounts of sugar can lead to dull and
wrinkled skin. These experts are placing the blame on a natural
process called glycation which takes the sugar in your blood and
attaches it to proteins which then form molecules called advanced
glycation end products. The more sugar you consume, the more these
molecules form and the more vital proteins are damaged. Collage
and elastin, which are key proteins for firm, elastic skin, are
most vulnerable against advanced glycation end products.
When collagen and elastin are damaged they become brittle and dry
causing the skin to wrinkle and sag. People will start noticing
these changes at age 35 and the effects quickly progress, according
to a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology. If that
isn’t worse enough, overindulging in sugary foods can also
lead your body to change the type of collagen in your system. You
have three different kinds of collagen: types I, II and III. Type
III is the best because it is stable and long lasting, while I is
the most fragile. If you consume too much sugar, glycation will
convert your type III collagen into type I, leading your skin to
lose suppleness. The advanced glycation end products also work to
eliminate natural antioxidant enzymes from the body which are there
to combat cell damaging and premature-aging-causing free radicals.
Therefore, if you’re on an anti aging mission, weight loss
is a great start. Avoid prepared foods that contain loads of sugar
labeled as corn syrup, barley malt, maltose, molasses, etc. Also,
sugar should only be 10 percent of your daily caloric intake. Aside
from an anti aging weight loss regime, you can turn back the hands
of time by filling your diet with foods containing antioxidants,
as well as wearing a minimum of SPF 15 everyday to keep the sun’s
harmful UV rays away.
